My group was one of the winners for IPCC 2011 animation competition and I had been working on this project for a while now. The final milestone presentation was held a few days ago at Sri Pentas, and we shown our work in progress trailer during that day. I guess it is be a good time to share a bit more info about this project with all my friends now.
My task in this project is to handle all the environment (background plates), VFX and compositing. Below are a few screenshots of works I have done. If image links are broken, visit this page instead.

3D modeling and animation in Blender 3D, photo paint over in Photoshop, compositing and VFX in AfterEffects.

Image above show the photo paint over method. Well, even the photo look like a painting in this scale. (Left) photo taken with camera phone. (Right) Paint over in Photoshop, VFX in AfterEffects.

Sometimes, I can’t use the photo paint over method as I don’t have a good photo or it could be even the place/location doesn’t exist in real life at all. So I have to model and render the environment with Blender3D. Then, do some final touch up in Photoshop and AfterEffects. (Left) 3D models in Blender3D. (Right) Paint over in Photoshop, VFX in AfterEffects.

At some case, I would just paint the whole background without 3D model of photo guide. (LEFT) Everything paint in Photoshop, except the airship is a 3D render. (RIGHT) Everything paint in Photoshop.

I had also use Blender3D’s simulation tool in this project for a few shot. (LEFT) Cloth simulation. (RIGHT) Smoke simulation.
The following video is a compilation of background plates that I did for “Sunsastera”. Youtube and Vimeo links are available.
